Rare 1985 Twenty Pence Trial Coin
Irish Coin: A rare gold toned 1985 Trial Coin, the obverse with side profile of a horse and '20p', the reverse 'Eire - 1985, and a central harp, the edge with three serrated sections, some wear, otherwise good example of this extremely rare modern Coin. (1)
These coins were issued in advance of production to various companies and organisations to facilitate calibration of vending machines and other coin operated devices such as telephones, meters etc. According to sources in the Central Bank less than 50 pieces of the 500 or so issued were not returned. To date about ten examples in private hands have been recorded, making it one of the rarest Irish modern coins, even scarcer than the 1943 florin. Lightly streaked and uneven toning, extremely fine.
Provenance: Private Collector in the West of Ireland, sold at Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers June 2019, and by descent to the present vendor.
