CAMPAIGN TO RECAPTURE KHARTOUM: 23 Feb. 1889 5m Postal Stationery env. from and endorsed by A.W.B. Watson, Chaplain to the Forces, Sudan Expedition to Tarporley, Cheshire. Cancelled by a fine "TRAVELLING POST OFFICE/S.P.S." c.d.s. with indistinct transit mark on reverse. After the Battle of Omdurman, 2 Sept. 1898, a memorial service for Gen. Gordon was held. The Rev. Watson objected to Roman Catholic, Presbyterian & Methodist churches being represented on the grounds that Gordon was a member of the Church of England. Rev Watson is depicted, second on the left, on the 1935 Gordon 20p & 50p stamps. Cross Reference: MILITARY
