.577 Enfield Snider Conversion Artillery Carbine, lock marked with Crown VR along with Enfield 1858, no visible serial number. Working action. Barrel length 545mm. Overall length 1015mm. NOTE: Section 58 (2) No licence required in the UK.
Provenance: By Repute... This rifle came from the old Nottingham Prison, which was demolished in 1900. My neighbour, Bill Swanwick, was allowed to play with this in his childhood (Bill was born in the 1930s, and lived on Goldsmith Street, where his father was a maker of surgical appliances). Bill and his friends used it when playing cowboys and Indians outside in the street. One day he was brought back to the shop with the gun by the local policeman, who suggested to the father that it would be better if he didn't play with it outside again.
