In 1961, the first 250 VW Beetle cars were assembled in Mexico through Automex (later Chrysler de México). In June of that year, a six-month contract was signed with Studebaker-Packard de México to assemble the Beetle from CKD kits imported from Germany. The following year, 1962, the first Volkswagen assembly plant was established in Xalostoc, State of Mexico, under the name PROMEXA (Promotora Mexicana de Automóviles - Mexican Automobile Promotor). Opening in June, the plant turned out 10 assembled units per day. In January 1964, Volkswagen de México, S.A. de C.V. was established. Production from the Xalostoc plant was unable to meet the growing demand, and in June 1965, a new plant opened in the suburbs of Puebla, Puebla on a 2-million-square-metre field.
The 2002 manufactured Mexican built Beetle offered here is described by the vendor as having been professionally converted to right hand drive by Karmann. Lots of expensive, quality, tasteful modifications inc. increased bhp 1.6 engine, retro racing sports rear engine lid, special alloys, steering wheel, subtle suspension lowering, new trimmed rear seat, Porsche front seats etc. Just MOT'd and drives and sounds sweet. The vendor says that this car is in excellent order throughout, and there are lots of Bills, Invoices and History.
