PHOTOGRAPHY: THE JAMES WATT MEDAL OF THE ROYAL CORNWALL POLYTECHNIC SOCIETY, 1st Class, in copper, awarded in 1876 to Brown & Barnes, 'For Enlarged Portraits', bust of Watt, reverse: legend in wreath, named on edge, 45.5mm, GVF. The medal awarded in the year before they became established as Brown, Barnes and Bell, with two studios in London, and other major towns and cities including Newcastle, advertising themselves in London as 'The Photographers' and in Edinburgh as 'Art Photographers and Portrait Painters'.
