Fees

A signed document from King Edward VIII to Cyril William Stapelton appointing him as Second Lieutenant Officer in the Land Forces etc from the 30th January 1936, by His Majesty's Command H Knox, within a mount, 29cm x 39.5cm, also with a coloured photograph of Edward VIII and a facsimile card of his abdication.

NB - Following the death of his father King George V on January 20th 1936, the following day Edward, accompanied by Wallis Simpson, flew from Sandringham to St James’ Palace in London and broke custom by watching the proclamation of his own accession to the throne from a window of the palace.

This military indenture is dated the same day, 21st January 1936 and was signed and witnessed at St James’ Palace, making this one of his first signatures as King, “Edward RI” (RI standing for Rex-Imperator or King – Emperor). Edward VIII's reign lasted 325 days, one of the shortest in British history, thus making his signature, as King, very rare.
