A late 18th century 8 day longcase clock, the 13' brass dial signed P. Clare, Manchester; the four pillar movement rack striking on a bell. The oak and crossbanded case with shaped long door flanked by reeded quarter pilasters. 82' high. Movement runs, keeps time and strikes. Peter Clare, 1729-1799, a Quaker was one of Manchester's best regarded clockmakers. Something of a polymath, he was also known as an inventor, scientist, educationalist and philosopher
