FINE BINDING. Miley, Rev. John. The History of the Papal States, from their origin to the present day. Three volumes. London: Newby, 1850. Bound by George Bellew of Dublin, in full cont. calf, with his with his ticket on the lower pastedown (oblong white label with double line frame: G. Bellew, / Bookbinder, / Stationer & Lithographer, / 79 Grafton St., / Dublin). Covers tooled in gilt and blind to a panel design with the emblem of Maynooth College in the centre. Spine divided into six compartments by five gilt raised bands, title and volume number on contrasting labels in the second and third, the remainder with tooling to a centre-and-corner pattern, board-edges and turn-ins gilt, splash-marbled end-papers; all edges marbled. Some minor rubbing, but a very attractive set.
