Henry Grant was born in Devizes, Devon, in January 1846 and lived there at Maryport Street with his father, James, a painter, and his mother, Ann. The 1871 census has Henry (aged 25) and brother James (aged 28) both listed as 'bird preserver' (taxidermist). On 29th February 1876 Henry married Clara Elizabeth Baxter (born Cambridge 1847). In the 1881 census he appears in Kensington as 'Artist portrait painter’ and in 1891, still in Kensington, as ‘Artist’. He was in Putney at the 1901 census, again as 'Artist portrait painter' and in Fulham at the 1911 census as ‘Portrait painter’. He died in Fulham in March 1932.
