VERY RARE MAIL CARRIED ON THE SCHOMBERG; 4 Oct. 1855 env. (few faults) 'pr Schomberg' to Sydney franked 6d Embossed cut-to-shape and tied by London barred numeral with "1d" accountancy h.s. also on front and rear with London and Sydney d.s. The Schomberg ran aground off Cape Otway and subsequently broke up with passengers and mail rescued by the SS Queen. Six examples, inc. this one, of mail carried on this wreck and previously unrecorded. One other example, to New South Wales, with stamp washed away, recorded by Peace (2013) at pages 62-64.
