Fairbanks, RA, 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, 1939-1945 War Medal, with medal allocation slip, card box from RA records; soldier's service and pay book; PoW 'Welcome Home' letter from Buckingham Palace, dated September 1945; research, including copied maps, PoW 'de-brief' forms and Japanese captivity records Herbert Henry Fairbanks was born on May 23rd 1919 near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the son of Leonard and Ellen Fairbanks. He enlisted as 940633 Gunner in the Royal Artillery on October 18th 1939. As a Bombardier, he was captured at Singapore by the Japanese on February 15th 1942 and spent the rest of the war as a PoW in Changhi Gaol (Singapore), Keijo and Jinsen (Korea), and Kawasaki/Kyushu (Japan), before his final release on September 19th 1945.
