DORSET - "108 POOL D" 1st-TYPE MILEAGE + "FREE/A/[LAURELS]" ON COVER REF. CONVICTS' SENTENCES; 25 Oct. 1790 EL franked from "Corfe Castle" to Evan Nepean (Under Secretary of State for the Home Office and friend of the 1st Governor of N.S.W., Arthur Philip) in London with a mainly fine rare "108 POOL D" 1st-Type Mileage and a fine strike of the equally rare brown encircled "FREE/A/[laurel leaves]" mark on the front. The contents regard some local gaol prisoners who had been sentenced to transportation (to N.S.W.) but for whom a change of sentence was sought to enable them to work on local Dorset projects. Fascinating and rare item. [Ex Bill Pipe auction; 28/11/2018 lot 438; realised £550.]Cross Reference: DORSET, FREE MAIL, PRISONS & PRISONERS, NEW SOUTH WALES
