A Wolseley pattern khaki solar top hat - by Christy's London 'for the tropics', size 6 5/8 with Davies Bryan & Co label to interior. Provenance: By family repute the hat was worn by Major William Gerald Hole during service in Egypt. W.G. Hole was educated at Winchester College and Merton College Oxford. Commissioned 2nd Lieut. in the Royal 1st Devon Imperial Yeomanry 20th August 1904, Captain 16th June 1909, Major 1st June 1914. He served in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine.
