General Sir Hugh Gough, in his despatch wrote of the battle "so desperate was the resistance, that very few of the defenders of this very strong position escaped..." and "I regret to say, that our loss has been very severe, infinitely beyond what I calculated on; indeed I did not do justice to the gallantry of my opponents.."
