Charles I (1625-1649), AR octagonal Shilling 1648, Pontefract Besieged, struck in 1649 after the execution of Charles I and bearing the name of his son, Charles II. Castle gate with flag at the top flanked by “P” and “C”, at the right end a cannon protrudes. At the left vertically, OBS., CAROLVS: SECVNDVS: 1648. rev . Jewelled crown at top over C R, DVM:SPIRO: SPERO. 4.61gm. (Brooker-1234 (same dies); N 2648; S 3150). Extremely fine, well struck, attractively patinated with just a little cabinet friction on some highpoints. An outstanding example. Old collector’s ticket marked purchased in 1935 for £10/10/-.
