Jose Tapiro Spanish 1836-1913 Watercolour titled The Snake Charmer depicting a snake charmer in a quiet back street of Tangier, Morocco. /signed Tapiro/Tanger lower left. Watercolour and gouache over pencil on paper. Measures 57 by 41.5 cms (22.5 by 16.25 inches) The watercolour displays the artist's love of detailed, ethnographic observation, as well as his technical accomplishment in his chosen medium. Tapiro studied at the Schools of Fine Art of Reus and Barcelona and won a bravery medal for saving his close friend and fellow artist Mariano Fortuny. This is a rare work of art and from a Scottish private collection. The painting was acquired by the aunt of the present owner in the 1930's. Exhibited probably London Myer and Son Gallery 1885.
