DANIEL QUARE (1648-1724): A fine and rare late 17th / early 18th Century silver front-opening pocket watch. Engraved Roman and Arabic silver dial with pierced blued steel hands, signed Quare, London. Chain fusee movement with tulip pillars and verge escapement. Pierced balance cock, backplate signed Daniel Quare, London, no. 4110. Main case hinge has some signs of soft solder repair, 5.2cm diameter. Daniel Quare (1648–1724) was a prominent English clockmaker, renowned for his significant contributions to horology during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Quare was particularly noted for his work in improving the design and accuracy of clocks, especially longcase and pocket watches. He is credited with advancements such as the development of the precision spring-driven clock and the improvement of the quarter-strike mechanism, which chimed on the quarter-hour. He was also one of the first to use the pendulum in timepieces, helping improve their accuracy.
