Anglo-Saxon silver penny of Aethelred II, Second Hand type, S.1146. Obv: +ÆÐELRD REX ΛNGLOX, missing 'E' in 'RED', 'X' formed of two round-backed 'C's. Wt. 1.3/20.1. Rev: +LYTELMΛN M¯O GIPES, Y backwards, right arm with hook end, square 'G' and 'S'. Ipswich Mint, moneyer Lytelman. This coin J.C. Sadler 'The Ipswich Mint' Vol. I, p.76, Fig. 143. His dies 1/2. 3 coins known of these dies, 15 coins and a fragment presently known in total. There is much discussion regarding this issue of Ipswich (see Vol. I pp.70-71). It looks anomalous, the lettering irons appear almost as modern block lettering. Ex. P.B. Roper, Ex. R.W. Sadler 1982, and Ex. J.C. Sadler 1977 Collections. Ex. Glendining 22. Sept. 1977 lot 541 (part) cracked. Almost certainly Ex. Seaby Bulletin March 1953, 4834, Fair (cracked). With two tickets. Full, round, well-centred. VF, cracked. Rare.
