PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY. Second World War recruitment and Home Front Mobilisation. Approximately forty-eighty black and white photographs by Topical, Wide World and other similar Press Agencies, together with three bomb shelter illustrations and a related letter regarding the Birmingham Estate Developers' Scheme for 3000 shelters, 21cm x 17cm up to 25cm x 20cm, nearly all with printed captions verso, circa 1938-40. (one photo torn, some others dog-eared) Subjects include: • Trench Digging in London parks. • Commandant Allen enrolling women in the Women's auxiliary service. • A.R.P Activity on Hackney Downs and Hampstead Heath. • Sandbags being taken into the Air Ministry Building. • Miss Kershaw with poster designer James Davies (Barbara Kershaw was chosen as the poster girl for the A.R.P, following earlier controversy regarding whether the head used on the poster issued by the WVS was that of a British girl) • Gas Mask distribution in Fulham • A young school child with items in preparation for possible evacuation • Czech Crisis - Today's scenes in London • United 'Save Peace' Demonstration in Trafalgar Square • Clashes between police and protestors following the demonstration • Recruits signing up for the AFS • Territorials of anti-aircraft units reporting for duty • Kissing goodbye at the barracks. and others, many interesting London views.
