'PRINCESS VICTORIA' IRISH SEA WRECK COVER WITH BELFAST "DAMAGED BY/SEA WATER" + P.O. LETTER; 30 Jan. 1953 env. (one flap & stamp lost in transit; understandable small stains etc.) from London (part machine cancel) to "Bangor Co. Down" in Northern Ireland with very fine purple separate loose-type "DAMAGED BY" & "SEA WATER" marks on the front. Together with Belfast PO headed letter of 1967 about the wreck stating that this purple cachet was most probably "done in Belfast". The MV Princess Victoria came to grief en route between Stranraer and Larne on the night of 31 January 1953; Hoggarth/Gwynn only record a handful of covers from this wreck and estimate that only between 10 & 19 exist. This P.O. cover and letter are ex John Woolfe (6/12/2006 lot 134; realised £350+BP). [The similar Santangelo cover (without the PO letter) realised £520+BP on 10/12/2010.] [Ex Graham Booth.] (2 items) Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, DOWN, CRASH/WRECK MAIL
