A SUBSTANTIAL WORLD WAR I SILVER SALVER, the border with raised gadrooned edge, the centre engraved with presentation message reading ‘From the Officers of No 16 General Hospital; Capt & No. 75 Hendry April 29th 1916’. Surrounding engraved with signatures. Raised on three scroll feet. Hallmarked to front Walker & Hall, Electro Works, Howard Street, Sheffield c.1915. Hallmarked to reverse Walker & Hall Sheffield England. Dimensions: 26cm diameter x 3cm high approx. Weight: 15ozt approx. Provenance: This piece has been consigned by the family of a relative who was a British Captain who served at the British 16th General Hospital in France, specifically Le Treport, Normandy. During the First World War, Le Treport was an important hospital centre. Hospitals were part of the casualty evacuation chain, further back from the front line than the Casualty Clearing Stations. They were manned by troops of the Royal Army Medical Corps, with attached Royal Engineers and men of the Army Service Corps. These hospitals contained nearly 10,000 beds.
