Freud, Sigmund: (1856-1939) Austrian Neurologist & Founder of Psychoanalysis. A signed letter dated Dec 1st 1921 on headed notepaper from Wien, IX., Berggasse 19. "Dear Dr Crowther, The discrepancy you have found out in my Psychopath of Everyday Life is easily explained. You will not detect it in the German edition, so it must be considered as a misprint of the English translation, the responsibility of which I may disclaim, Yours Respectfully, Freud." Together with the letter from Dr Crowther to Freud and the envelope it was sent in. Crowther was a Doctor at Middleton - in Wharfedale Sanatorium, which opened during the Great War to treat soldiers, it later became a TB hospital.
Sometimes called the "Mistake Book" (to go with the Dream Book and the Joke Book), The Psychopathology of Everyday Life became one of the scientific classics of the 20th century. Freud realised he was becoming a celebrity when he found his cabin-steward reading the Mistake Book on his 1909 visit to the States. Based on Freud's researches into slips and parapraxes from 1897 onwards, it became perhaps the best-known of all Freud's writings.
