A French Louis XIV Officer’s Spontoon or Partisan, late 17th/early 18th century, the head formed with a central blade etched with the royal ‘sun-in-splendour’ mask, its enclosing cartouche suspended within designs of scrollwork, the lower portion etched with further scrollwork framing an oval filled with a trophy-of-arms, on its original wooden haft (worn and pitted throughout, heavily on one side), head length 30cm
