A PAIR OF FIRST WORLD WAR CASUALTY TRIOS AND PLAQUES TO THE BIGG FAMILY BROTHERS. A Trio comprising 1914-15 Star named to G-3055 L. CPL E.S. Brigg R. Suss.R, War Medal and Victory Medal to Bigg as a Private, Memorial Plaque named to Edward Samuel Bigg and similar trio, the Star named to M4616 J.V, Bigg Ck. Mte. R.N. War Meal and Victory Medal similarly named, Memorial Plaque to John Valentine Bigg. Mounted for display with copied research. Edward was born c. 1888, he attested at Hove for the 9th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Disembarking for France on the 31st August 1915 and within three weeks was taking part in the Battle of Loos. Edward was killed in this action on the 28th September, initially reported as missing, it was on the 28th that the Battalion withdrew to trenches at Sailiy Les Bourse, a roll was called and 362 other ranks were found to be missing or wounded. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, he was 27 years old. The rank of Private is presumably an error. John Valentine Bigg was born on the 20th November. He joined the Royal Navy at Portsmouth on the 5th June 1912. His career in the Navy ended on the 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. Working as a Cook's Mate aboard H.M.S. Queen Mary. Commanded by vice Admiral Sir John Beatty. Hit by the Seydlitz and Derflinger she blew apart when one or both of the forward magazines blew.There were 57 officers and 1209 men killed. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth naval Memorial, Both brothers are also commemorated on the Brighton War Memorial.
