Henry Robins, British (1820 - 1892)"Her Majesty's Ship "Research," O.O.C., depicting a three mast ship in rough seas, approx. 46cms x 76cms (18" x 30") signed lower right, with inscribed gilt mount, and oak frame. (1)úHMS Research was a small ironclad warship, converted from a wooden-hulled sloop and launched in 1863. She rolled excessively, was normally retained in harbour during the winter months, and was described as "probably the very worst vessel, both as a fighting machine and a sea-boat, that ever yet went out of a dockyard of any nation pretending to a maritime reputation". She was laid up in 1878 and sold for breaking in 1884. Beresford served on her as a sub-lieutenant from 1867 until he was transferred to the Victoria and Albert in the summer of 1868. During this period she was on patrol duty in the Irish Sea and was based in Holyhead; Beresford took advantage of being so close to home, spending much of his time hunting and socialising.
