1854 Fastnet Rock Lighthouse Plate, c.9.5 x 5in. On the 10th of November 1847 a ship by the name of the "Stephen Whitney" was travelling around the southern coast of Ireland on it's journey to Liverpool. In dense fog the crew mistook Cape Clear Lighthouse for the Old Head of Kinsale Lighthouse, it hit West Calf Island and broke up within 10 minutes with the loss of 92 of the 110 passengers and crew onboard. It was the final straw for Cape Clear Lighthouse which had a reputation of being difficult to see in bad weather. In 1854 Fastnet Rock Lighthouse replaced Cape Clear. This plaque is the original plaque afixed to Fastnet Rock when it opened in 1854. It was later replaced in 1901 by a larger lighthouse on the same site. Lot 226 is the original plaque from the 1854 lighthouse.
