* Paris made early causal connections between cancer and the risk of working in copper-smelting; he explored the occurrence of accidents in mining; he lectured on chemistry to the Royal Geological Society; and he was an advocate of complementary medicine and herbalism. He is thought to have invented the optical device known as the thaumatrope. Paris was elected President of The Royal College of Physicians in 1844.
