WW1 Manchester Regiment / Machine Gun Corps Bayonet Charging DCM Group of Medals. Awarded to Private Ernest Aubrey who volunteered for service with the Manchester Regiment and transferred to the MGC wining the Distinguished Conduct Medal for single handedly bayonet charging an enemy Machine gun and capturing the gun and crew. Comprising: Distinguished Conduct Medal 133148 PTE E AUBREY 61/MGC, British War Medal Victory Medal 133148 PTE E AUBREY MGC. Medals loose original ribbons. The group is accompanied by a small quantity of ephemera including: Original portrait photograph, badged Manchester Regiment, November 3rd 5th Army Routine Orders announcing Aubry's Immediate DCM. 1913 County of Middlesex Driver's Licence etc. The announcement of the DCM appeared in the London Gazette on the 18th February 1919. For most conspicuous gallantry and determination on 2nd October, 1918, during an attack on Bartlett Farm, when the infantry were held up by a machine gun. He fixed his bayonet and dashed across the open at the gun, which he captured with its crew of four, thus enabling the Infantry to advance. Private Ernest Aubrey a native of Oldham he volunteered in December 1915 for service with the Manchester Regiment being posted to the 3rd Bn. In late January 1918 he transferred to the MGC and was posted to France in April 1918 to the 61st Bn, part of the 5th Army. His gallantry occurred on the 2nd October and one month later on the 1st November 1918 he was wounded by shrapnel and is also noted with gas poisoning. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1919.
