Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) the pioneering British navigator and cartographer who played a crucial role in the exploration and mapping of Australia. His most significant achievement was being the first person to circumnavigate the Australian continent, which he confirmed as a single landmass. This voyage, conducted from 1801 to 1803, provided valuable geographical and scientific data that greatly advanced the understanding of Australia's coastline and landscape. Flinders also coined the name "Australia," helping establish its modern identity. His meticulous charts and maps were essential for future explorers and settlers, cementing his importance in maritime history and Australia's development. The only confirmed portrait of Flinders is with the NPG in London, the example offered here is potentially very important if the attribution can be confirmed. The uniform is for a lieutenant, a rank achieved by Flinders in 1798 when he was given command of the Norfolk, age 24 years.
