1840 (Jan. 10th) Uniform One Penny Postage. Pre-printed ‘Protector Life Association’ return form sent on the first day of the new penny post rate from Maidstone to London with a manuscript '2' at top as the cover was unpaid and the postage charge due upon arrival was double the new rate of postage. Backstamped by a Maidstone dispatch for JA.10.1840 and a London arrival for the following day. Filing fold and some wear. Scarce unpaid first day of use cover.
