Gustave Dore - Original engraving from The Wandering Jew 1857.

This original wood engraving is Plate 4 from the scarce first edition of The Legend of the Wandering Jew by Pierre Dupont and illustrated by Gustav Dore. Published by Addey and Co. Covent Garden, London 1857.

This work is a poem on the legend with the prologue and epilogue by Pierre Dupont and translated into English, with critical remarks by George W Thornbury.

Dore was a printmaker, artist and illustrator. He worked primarily with wood engraving and his works were prolific and in this work he depicts the Wandering Jew's immortal journey from the crucifixion of Christ to Judgement Day.

The beautiful monochrome artwork is filled with Dore's usual dramatic style, constructed with biblical, epic conflict woven into each stroke, displaying this terrible legend in all its glory. With sweeping, powerful illustrations befitting the legend, Gustave Dore's collected work is enchantingly presented in these extremely scarce prints.

Size: approx. 22in x 15in. (55cm x 38.5cm).

The print is in excellent condition - please inspect the image carefully.
