The draft of the 1814 application to the Marquess of Wellington for the promotion of Brevet Colonel (later Sir) Edward Miles (1775-1848):
'To His Excellency Field Marshal the Marquiss Wellington, Commander in Chief of His Britanic Majesty’s Forces in the Peninsular &c &c
The Memorial [record of service] of Major Edward Miles, 38th Regiment of Infantry and Brevet Lieut. Colonel sheweth that Memorialist is now in his twenty-first year in the 38th Regiment and has served with it in the campaigns of 1794 and 1795 in Holland under His Royal Highness the Duke of York, was six years in the West Indies, chiefly in the Grenadier Battalion, was at the reduction of St. Lucia & Grenada, and the capture of Trinidad in the years 1796 & 1797 and served in Portugal under His Excellency the Marquiss Wellington and at the Actions of Roleia and Vimiera , and also served the Campaign in Spain under the late Sir John Moore and at the Battle of Corunna. Memorialist likewise was in the expedition to Walcheren and remained there until the evacuation of the Island. Memorialist commanded the 38th Regiment at the Battle of Salamanca the 22nd July 1812 where he was severely wounded, and was with the 38th Regiment at Villa Morel on the retreat from Burgos and also at the Battle of Vittoria on the 21st June 1813 and commanded his Regiment at the assault and storming of St. Sebastian at which place he received an injurious blow on the side, as likewise so violent as contusions on the shin bone, as to confine him to his bed for a length of time. Memorialist begs leave to state that he has been invariably with his Regiment, that he has purchased all his commissions and for nine years been Major in his Regiment, seven of which he has been the Senior of his Rank. Memorialist has the honor to forward the testimony of Major General [Sir John] Oswald as to his conduct since he has been under his command, and therefore prays your Excellency in consideration of his long services to recommend him to His Royal Highness, the Commander-in-Chief for Promotion in the Line, which is humbly submitted – E.
