Louis Joseph Watteau (French, 1731-1798) Pastoral scene with rustic figures, children, a musician and a pedlar presenting her wares outside a tavern, 1781 signed and dated lower left, and with further pencil inscription to stretcher oil on canvas 89 x 96cm. Provenance: ex Christie's Amsterdam, 24 May 2016, lot 92 then, Dutch private collection until acquired by the present owner. Louis Joseph Watteau, called 'Watteau de Lille' was a nephew of the famous Antoine Watteau, and like his uncle became best known for his fêtes galantes and romanticised depictions of rustic gatherings. A similar inn scene with a merchant presenting her wares is in the collection of the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille.
