PLAN OF THE INVESTITURE OF OSTEND SURRENDERED, 6 JULY 1706
a hand-coloured print, from Mr. Rapin’s History of England, showing the fortified port of Ostend with the allied troop positions close by and the English fleet ranged offshore, contained in glazed frame -- 16¼ x 20¾in. (41 x 52.5cm.)
The siege of Ostend, during the War of the Spanish Succession, began following Marlborough’s victory at Ramillies in May 1706. The French, who held the port, were determined to hold out for as long as possible despite the strength of the forces ranged against them and the support of the Royal Navy offshore under the command of Sir Stafford Fairborne who eventually employed bomb ketches to set the town alight; Ostend finally surrendered after three weeks.
