A Rare late 16th century Japanese Namban cabinet on an 18th century or earlier Chippendale style lacquered stand, the frieze securing the cabinet with period iron hooks and eyes, the cabinet interior a configuration of seven drawers concealed behind a lockable fall front. Box 32 cm x 46 cm x 32 cm, stand 75 cm x 47 cm. Provenance: Well-known titled household in Hampshire. Note: In the second half of the sixteenth century, Japanese lacquer made for Western markets was known as nanban (Southern Barbarian), a reference to the epithet given to foreigners from Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Many of these export lacquers were made in Kyoto. The maki-e (sprinkled picture) and rich mother-of-pearl decoration on this box consists of continuous interlinked circles (shipp?) with stylized flowers in the intersections and five flower roundels on the lid.
