A WWII period leather flying helmet, formerly the property of Major Robert Hickman Holmes, RAF: the leather helmet with fitted headphones and canvas oxygen mask with microphone, together with an RAF Mae West Air Ministry 1941 pattern life jacket (lacking internal bladder) a brown leather and sheepskin lined motoring coat, an Air Ministry issue air line with brass connector stamped 6D/101/39 to one side and 'Gunfire' to the other, also together with a collection of associated canvas webbing, a civilian gas mask and related items. *Notes Major Hickman Holmes qualified as an instructor on Anti Aircraft Defence in 1942 and was appointed as adviser to Air Officer Commanding 9 Group RAF. In October of the same year he was promoted to GSO II and became significant in the planning and operation of exercises and combined training between Fighter, Bomber and AA commands. He also operated on High Altitude Surveillance.
