A FIRST DAY OF THE SOMME PAIR AND MEMORIAL PLAQUE TO RIFLE BRIGADE. A Great War Pair comprising War Medal and Victory Medal named to S-15366 Pte A.F.Alston RIF BRIG. The plaque named Anthony Frederick Alston. Anthony Alston was the son of Frederick and Emma Alston of Tilkey Rd. Coggeshall, Essex. A resident of Kentish Town, he enlisted at St Pancras and served with the 1st battalion of the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own). On the first day of the battle of the Somme Alston's battalion played their part in the attack on the Redan Ridge, they entered the German line by 10.00am where heavy close quarter fighting took place. They suffered a total of 474 casualties which included Anthony Alston. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery 24years old at the time of his death. Sold with photographs of his headstone, the memorial at Cogglehall and with extensive copied research. Plaque in original card cover. *CR Plaque polished. A lot fee of £8 inc.
