E. G. Chapman (British, 20th century),
Kennelled hounds asleep,
Oil on canvas,
Signed and dated 1931 lower right,
35cm x 60cm,
Framed and glazed
The picture is framed under glass and has not been removed for inspection. The paint surface shows no obvious damage, however there is what appears to be spider's web residue in places under the glass. Examination under UV shows no obvious evidence of overpainting or restoration, however this may not be reliable due to the presence of the glass. The mounting nails have rubbed the canvas on the back of the stretcher, and the canvas is unsecured along the top edge of the stretcher where the stretcher nails have pull ed through. This does not appear to have unduly affected the front of the canvas, which appears to be lying reasonably flat. The frame appears to be structurally sound, but shows an open joint to the top left corner, and rubbing and losses to the finish of all corners. The frame and the glass are dirty and would benefit from cleaning.
