Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Devon spinners Watercolour, signed, 34 x 43cm. The local wool trade was a thriving cottage industry in Buckfastleigh and other parts of Devon up to the end of the 19th Century. Here, St Ives artist Clare White captures figures busy at spinning wheels, carrying on the traditional rural craft, which had become so very much rarer to see in action by the time she painted this scene in the late 1940s / 1950s.
