RARE BLUE "S1" CANCELLED 24c-RATE HONG KONG SINGLE-FRANKING COVER TO INDIA; Attractive 10 Oct. 1872 env. (flap mostly lost; slight edge stains) from "SHANGHAE" (mainly fine blue cds on reverse) to Lt. Col. J.M. [Shaw] Stewart in "Madras" with Hong Kong 24c Green tied by a very fine blue Shanghai "S1" tall barred Numeral (and by the recipient's pencil date of receipt) with red manuscript "8" (accountancy marking; 8d due to Indian PO?) on the front and mainly fine "HONG KONG" (15 Oct.) & Madras (9 Nov.) backstamps.
