A selection of Iona marble set jewellery, comprised of an oval brooch, three rings, a marcasite and floral spray brooch, a pair of stud earrings, a pair of clip-on earrings, a bead necklace and a large heart-shaped pendant.
We are pleased to be offering this lot from the stock of family run firm Shipton and Co., who were based in Hastings White Rock area, and who were unfortunately forced to close their doors in 2014 after a section of the rock face above collapsed onto their shop, making the building unsafe. Composed of a combination of limestone and serpentine this 2700 million year old rock is found in the under-water seams off the Isle of Iona, Scotland with pebbles being found on the local beaches, and was also once quarried on the island. Crafted for centuries into jewellery and talismen by the island's inhabitants, who believed it had magical properties including giving protection against shipwreck, fire, and miscarriage, the local fishermen would not take to the water without a piece of it in their possession. It is still a highly regarded stone to this day, unique to this area of Scotland.
