£3,500 - £3,800
An extremely rare double barrelled 22 bore percussion shotgun with Berenger's Patent safety device, 43" overall, nicely re-browned twist barrels 28" with London proofs and number "42" below the breeches, the top rib engraved "Patent Gun Manufactory, Cremorne House, Chelsea", the unusual shaped back action locks and hammers engraved with scrolls and game birds, walnut stock with chequered wrist and engraved blue steel mounts including a spur beneath the fore end which operates the safety catches by means of a series of sprung levers, the spur marked "Patent", the trigger guard engraved "Bar. de Berenger's Patent No 109", with its original brass mounted wooden ramrod. Good Working Order & Clean Condition, the trigger guard retaining much original blueing (the arms of the patent safety are good replacements). Accompanied by a copy of part of the Patent Specifications for the safety catch, and an article about Baron de Berenger mentioning his purchase of Chelsea Farm in 1830 and the founding of Cremorne Gardens. It is possible that the original safety lever arms were removed owing to the awkwardness of operating the safety while firing the gun! £3500-3800
