Gloucestershire Regiment attributed 1878 Pattern Territorial Officer's helmet. A good and rare post 1902 example of the Home Service Pattern blue cloth helmet by Samuel Gardner & Co. Complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose head bosses supporting a velvet backed chin chain. To the front, a gilt metal helmet plate, within the Garter, a silver Sphinx resting on a blank tablet (indicating Militia or Territorial Battalion) set on a black velvet ground. To the base of the wreath an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The Gloucestershire Regiment”. The interior with leather sweatband and original taliors paper label with name "P.L.COATES", this name is repeated in ink. Overall a very good clean example, gilt bright. Retains original helmet plate as worn. Militia and Territorial Battalions were not authorised to wear the famous back badge.
Attributed to Lieutenant Colonel P.L. Coates DSO., TD.,MID. who was commissioned into 3rd VB and promted Captain in 1905 . He continued to serve with the 1/6th Bn being awarded the DSO (Jan 1917) He would during the Great War be attached and command the 2/5th Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment
