A Chinese verte-Imari tea caddy with the arms of Sampaio e Melo for the Portuguese market, Kangxi

H.: 14,6 cm

Ref.: Bonhams London, 11 November 2010, lot 343, for a similar example (sold GBP 20.400,00) (link).

`The arms are those of Sampaio e Melo. Compare a similar rectangular tea caddy (also missing its cover) bearing the arms of Sampaio e Melo, now in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon, illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Caminos da Porcelana: Dinastias Ming e Qing, Lisbon, 1998, Catalogue no. 45. See also note for Catalogue no. 44, where it is noted that the arms have been attributed by Nuno de Castro to Francisco Jose de Sampaio Melo e Castro, 11th Lord of Vila Flor, 66th Governor and 40th Viceroy of India from 1720 to 1723. According to Luis Ferros, these services were very probably commissioned either by Antonio Corte Real de Sampaio, 2nd Morgado de Santa Cruz, or by his son Manuel Corte Real de Sampaio. However, according to Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos, since the services can be dated to the early 18th century, they could not have been commissioned by Antonio Corte Real de Sampaio.'
