1816 (Sep 5) Entire letter from the Duke of St. Albans at Worthing, addressed to "F. Freeling Esq., General Post Office", complaining about the Reigate Postmaster - "I thank you about your advice about pouches for my letters but the Postmaster at Ryegate refuses to comply ... I told him it was your suggestion & that I would give him a Guinea at Xmas for his troubles .... I think him unreasonable as I understand he gets £30 per annum from the General Post Office, he makes £20 a year by the Penny for each letter & £2 a year for the Merstham bag making £52 a year besides other charges - for instance he charged me two pence for one letter put in at Ryegate, I collected this letter which had never been out of his house .... he says the two pence was for responsibility. I told the Postmaster at Merstham I would give him a Guinea every Xmas and he seems extremely desirous to serve the public, it is a pity Merstham is not a regular Post Office". Also a free front signed by St. Albans. (2).
