** BRISTOL (STAPLETON) - LETTER EX FRANCE TO P.O.W. BUT HELD IN PARIS POST OFFICE's "CABINET NOIR"; Fine 11 Nov. 1806 EL (unsealed; mainly about financial matters) from "Bordeaux" unusually addressed in full to; "M. Jean Baptiste Laliziere, Prisonnier de guerre, provenant du Corsaire Le Brave, detenu a Stableton, Bristol" with v. fine "P.32.P/BORDEAUX" and fair red Paris "P.P.P.P." on the front and "11" prepaid rate on reverse, but clearly never delivered - these letters in transit soon after Napoleon's suspension of Mail exchange from 21 Nov. 1806 are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir") - there is a distinctive diamond-shaped hole cut into the inside page. [See MFPWE, p.109.] Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, BRISTOL
