ASCRIBED TO MARGARETA HAVERMAN (1693 - c. 1758 or 1766) Roses, peonies, lilies, tulips, carnations, a sunflower and other flowers in a gilded classical vase, on a ledge, a sphinx beyond, oil on canvas, in an 18th century carved and gilded frame, 78 x 61 cm. Provenance: Ruth, Viscountess Lee of Fareham (1869-1966); bought from Frost & Reed (as by Margareta Haverman), 41 New Bond Street, London, 1967.
Ruth Moore, was the wife of the 1st Viscount Lee. The Lees were ambitious picture collectors, and Lord Lee persuaded Samuel Courtauld to endow the University of London with the famous institute and art collection which bears his name. Lady Lee bequeathed a number of paintings to the Courtauld Institute while other pictures were sent for sale at Christie's in November 1966.
Around 1716 Magareta Haverman was a pupil of Jan van Huysum, she married Jacques de Mondoteguy (d. 1739) in Amsterdam in 1721 and moved to Paris soon after. There she joined the 'Academie' and from 1724 until 1758 she lived in her husband's home town of Bayonne. She may have died in or after 1758. Saur 1999-2000 records her death in 1766 (vol. 4, p. 611).
