Nicholas Bion (French, 1652-1733) an 18th century silver Butterfield type compass sundial in original leather case, the case with indistinct markings but XRF confirmed as silver, the case profusely engraved to the front with Roman numerals and other decorative motifs, a folding bird designed gnomon with a 4 point compass, the back named "Bion a Paris", the back of the compass engraved with a scene of a dog under the sun and the motto "Ardent et Fidette" and engraved with a large number of mainly Western European place names, housed in original leather covered box, hinge broken, approx 65mm x 55mm
