BRiTISH OCCUPATION OF PROME - EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF BATTLES & ATTACK; 28 Apr. 1825 EL to England datelined at Prome with "MADRAS SHIP LETTER" and London d.s. on rear and "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" on front. Content by Lt William Gossip ref We arrived here yesterday after a long tedious march of two months and a half. Sir Archibald Campbell marched in with the Royal Division of the Army on the 25th without a shot being fired.....we shall have peace in a month. I think otherwise they would not have evacuated so string a position as this. The killing they got at Donnchew [?] I suspect is very strongly impressed upon their memory. They there lost their great & I believe only general.... Remarkable contemporary insight of the First Burmese War. Cross Reference: MILITARY, INDIA, SHIP LETTERS, INCOMING OVERSEAS MAIL
