Giles Robert de Vaugondy and his son Didier were joint publishers of Atlas Universel and it took fifteen years to produce. According to Norwich, 601 copies were printed. The interior of Africa is mostly empty. This map is a revision of Robert de Vaugondy's L'Afrique Divisee map; the shape of the Cape is more rounded and Cape Francois, Cape Falso and Mosselbay are added.
